Sunderland‘s Conservatives have named Michael Hartnack the member who has made the most significant contribution to local politics in 2020.
From the very beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Michael has supported residents across Sunderland with the delivery of groceries, prescriptions, hot meals and food parcels.
Through his People Helping People scheme, which recruited over 120 volunteers and developed links with local organisations and businesses, Michael coordinated the delivery of over 14,000 meals.
When local food banks turned away those on furlough and who were self-isolating, Michael set up his own food bank to support people affected by COVID-19.
The food delivered by Michael, kindly donated by local businesses, was worth in excess of £73,000.
Michael gave up his Christmas to deliver Christmas dinners to families across the city, having already distributed food hampers and mince pies over the preceding days.
Michael, our Fulwell Ward candidate, is a retired former police chief who has served as a school governor for over 30 years. Over the last year, he has supported his school to grapple with the challenges of socially distanced teaching and remaining COVID compliant.
He is a true public servant who has used his skills and experience to protect the most vulnerable during an unprecedented year.
