Sunderland Conservatives Leader, Antony Mullen, has welcomed the government's reaffirmed commitment to providing funding for the city's railway station.
In the Spending Review yesterday, the Chancellor announced a package of transport and infrastructure investment for the North East, including funding for the Tyne and Wear Metro.
Included in the announcement was a continued commitment to inject £16 million of funding into Sunderland's city centre train station.
Antony Mullen, Conservative Group Leader and a councillor for Barnes Ward, said:
"There was much to be welcomed in the Chancellor's announcements.
"We have long campaigned for a new, modern railway station fit for the kind of city we aspire to be.
"The £16m in government funding will give us a station to be proud of.
"Sunderland in undergoing a transformation - and the role of government infrastructure funding in that cannot be overstated."
