Sunderland Conservatives have congratulated Anne-Marie Trevelyan upon her appointment as Secretary of State for Transport, noting that it is pleasing to see North East MPs entering senior government positions.
Cllr Antony Mullen, the Leader of the Sunderland Conservatives, has written to the new Secretary of State to call on the government to extend the Tyne and Wear Metro into Washington.
Commenting, Cllr Antony Mullen said:
"I have congratulated Anne-Marie on her new role but, given she is a North East MP, it also seemed like a good opportunity to make the economic and environmental case for extending the Metro to Washington.
"The government has invested enormously in infrastructure development in Sunderland and Washington, but the Metro extension would be in another league entirely."
Cllr Paul Donaghy, Conservative Councillor for Washington South, added:
"Extending the Metro line into Washington would be a massive boost for residents, who at the moment either have to be able to drive or rely on buses to get into Sunderland city centre.
"Washington is the fourth biggest town in the country without its own train station. This investment will create jobs and a more reliable transport network."
